SUGAR CANE

Sugar cane is a long and solid tall plant with a high sucrose content that is sugar. Its extraction requires several processing stages and filtering until the crystallization process. In some area of the Amazon and Philippines, its consumption is recommended to treat gastrointestinal diseases, although its bark is also used to treat bleeding.

Refined white sugar and brown sugar are obtained from the sugar cane and are used as sweeteners. It is also used to preserve food, and as sugar inhibits microbial growth. Try it out this way: cut off in half and with a spoon eat the jelly pulp. Its flavor is sweet and aromatic, a mixture of apple, lychee and persimmon.

Culture

In New Iberia (Louisiana) is held the Annual Sugar Cane Festival, where all sugar cane producers organize a festival full of activities with the purpose to promote all the benefits and usage of the sugar cane, and also to emphasize the importance of this plant to the region.

Origin

It is originally from Southeast Asia, concretely from New Guinea. Nevertheless, today is widely cultivated, especially in Latin America.
